Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Knopp works at the intersection of biomedical imaging, computational sensing, and algorithmic data processing. Since October 2024, he serves as the Head of the Diagnostics Business Channel at Fraunhofer IMTE. In October 2026, he transitioned to a Full Professorship at the University of Lübeck, where he directs the Magnetic Sensing (MagSens) research group. He earned his Diploma in Computer Science in 2007 (with highest distinction) and his Ph.D. in 2010 (summa cum laude) from the University of Lübeck. His doctoral research on Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) was awarded the Klee Prize by the DGBMT (VDE). Following his doctorate, he led the BMBF-funded MAPIT project and co-authored the first scientific textbook on MPI. He also gained industrial experience at Bruker BioSpin MRI GmbH (2011–2012), contributing to the development of the first commercially available pre-clinical MPI system, and at Thorlabs GmbH (2012–2014), focusing on software architectures for optical coherence tomography (OCT). In 2014, he was appointed as a W3 Professor for Biomedical Imaging, holding a joint professorship between the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). During his time in Hamburg, he established and directed the Bachelor and Master programs in Data Science. His research spans tomographic imaging and magnetic sensing, with a strong emphasis on advanced signal processing, machine learning, and high-performance scientific programming.
